SMAUG (Simulated Medieval Adventure Multi-User Game) is a MUD engine derived from Merc and DikuMUD. SMAUG was originally a proprietary engine for Realms of Despair, launched in July 1994. The source code was first released in December 1996. It's primary author is Derek Snider, owner of Realms of Despair, author of the DikuMUD Family Tree on usenet, and former owner of the original MUD source code repository, ftp.game.org (now defunct).
