AustinMUD is one of Denmark's oldest MUDs, and the oldest one still running. It was highly popular until about 2005, after which it has been substantially depopulated, mainly due to the arrival of improved graphical games offerings such as World of Warcraft. It also suffered a player exodus due to some highly unpopular administrator measures in areas where players felt they should have control. The MUD still has a loyal fan base among the old users, although there rarely are many players on the server at the same time. In its heydays, it boasted several hundred simultaneous players.

AustinMUD started at the Computer Science Department at Aarhus University (DAIMI) in 1991 by a group of students. It is based on the popular DikuMUD, which was named after the place it was made (Department of Computer Science, University of Copenhagen). AustinMUD, named for the machine it was initially running on, lived at DAIMI for a few years, then moved to the Department of Information and Media Studies (IMV). Since it has been moved to a machine with PRG at DTU, and has now finally found its way to a private server outside the university realm.

The initial goal of AustinMUD was to make a MUD that wasn't just a mix of commonly shared zones, like many at the time. The original areas were based on a hand-drawn world map, and shared internal references and history. These zones were all unique to AustinMUD. The addition of simple in-game programming features allowed more complex mobs and quests, as well as large one-off events. Development and expansion are now carried out exclusively by the users and the world of AustinMUD is still growing albeit very slowly compared to earlier times.

On 29th December 2009 AustinMUD had 38 active characters on the server, which was the highest number in 2009. It is still available using telnet at austinmud.com:4000
